Key Challenges

  • Very soft ground in flood plain area – difficult to get adequate working platform bearing capacity for the sheet pile installation rig so we had to supplement this with steel road plates to spread the loading.
  • Extremely intricate construction sequence with tight tolerances to ensure that all the meeting points and baffles of the fishway structure lined up.

Scope

  • Our works were part of the $6.8m upgrade of the Old Man Creek System (which in itself was part of the $65m Murrumbidgee Computer Aided River Management Project)
  • Installation of 1900 linear metres of 214no AZ14 sheet piles ranging between 4m and 14m in length to create a fishway structure.
  • Carried out using a schedule of rates

Geotechnical conditions

  • Silt, stiff clay and then medium dense sand at depth.

Key Plant

  • RG21 Sheet piling rig serviced by a mobile service crane.
